Course Description for CMNS 130 – Intro to Digital Media

An introduction to the theory, analysis, and practice of digital media. The course explores the formal qualities of digital media, as well as the political, economic, social and individual impact of creating and using digital content. This course will provide students with the frameworks to evaluate the fundamental concepts of digital studies in an attempt to scrutinize their own participation in digital and social media. Whilst departing from a media history perspective that discusses the revolutionary changes brought by new media and cultural software to our society, the course explores the contexts of creating and using digital content, from our daily life to our networked, global context. Last but not least, students will develop the basic knowledge and skills required to create digital projects in various formats, using industry recognized or more experimental platforms. (2,2,0)
